Are you serious about your wine? The wines of Alentejo are among the best produced in Portugal. and enjoy wide popularity, especially the reds. We head south towards the vineyards of Esporão, where you’ll visit the vast farm, the winepress and bottling facilities, and sample the great wines produced therein. From there, we visit the quiet medieval village of Monsaraz, surrounded by castle walls, from where you can see the intricate lake of Alqueva’s dam. Then we head on to Évora. Here, you’ll be able to walk its old streets, see the Roman “Temple of Diana”, the cathedral, the “Chapel of the Bones”, before we make our way back.

Tomar

Founded by Romans in the fist century AD, and located on a fertile valley irrigated by the river Nabão, Tomar regained prominence in the 12th century when the Knights Templar made it their headquarters in Portugal. Later recast as the Order of Christ, their convent, under headmaster Henry the Navigator, would become the nerve center from where the Portuguese maritime expansion was overseen. Our tour will take you to the Templar Castle, Convent of Christ, Pegões Aquaduct, St. John the Baptist Church, the Synagogue, and a walkabout through the ancient town district.

Fátima, Óbidos & more

We usually start by Lisbon, with the Tower of Belém, Jerónimos Monastery and the Monument to the Discoverers. We proceed to the dontown “Baixa”, Liberty Avenue, and leave town towards Sintra. On the way, we stop to visit the Royal Palace of Queluz. In Sintra, you’ll have time to walk around the town and visit the National Royal Palace or the enigmatic Quinta da Regaleira estate. We cross over the mountain to the promontory of Cabo da Roca, and finish taking the “Marginal”, the famous coastal road.

Home of one of Europe’s oldest universities and capital of the kingdom until 1255, Coimbra is a charming maze of old narrow streets, stairs, medieval arches and towers. Our tour starts with a visit to the archaeological site of Conímbriga, then onto the old convent of Santa-Clara-a-Velha. The centerpiece is the visit to the university, in particular, to its splendid barroque library. The tour is completed with a walkabout in the old town, that will include a visit to the basement of the old Roman Forum, the old and the new cathedrals, and the Santa Cruz Monastery, where our two first kings rest.

We start by the barroque Palace of Queluz, then the massive neoclassical complex of Mafra (royal palace-monastery). We pay a visit to the fishing / surfing town of Ericeira before we head into Sintra, where we will visit the Moorish Castle and the Pena Palace. The tour unfolds by the seaside as we visit the promontory of Cabo da Roca and make our way back by the “Marginal” coastal road.

Arrábida

Arrábida is a chain of mountains and natural park located south of Lisbon, on the north bank of the estuary of river Sado. This area of breathtaking natural beauty has since antiquity awed humans and inspired their sprituality. Besides driving through spectacular mountain roads overlooking the sea, we will visit the castles of Palmela and Sesimbra, the cove of Portinho da Arrábida, and the santuary and promontory of Cabo Espichel. On wednesdays and weekends, by appointment, you may visit the monastery of Arrábida, or, alternatively, at Azeitão, visit a tile workshop and a local winery.
